Would driving through a 15 mile tunnel excite you or scare you? What if driving through the tunnel is the only option? The 15 mile, Laerdal Tunnel is the longest passenger car tunnel in the world. It opened in Norway in the year 2000, and is built under a mountain range. A mountain range that is closed to traffic most of the year due to snow. The Laerdal tunnel links the east side to the west side of the country. Designed with the driver in mind, every mile there is a place to turn around and lots of places to pull off and rest. There are twists and turns built in to reduce driver fatigue and 3 caverns or wider spots, each with yellow and blue lights to remind us of the sun. Traffic is limited to reduce hazards and fire extinguishers are found every 125 yards. The average ride through the tunnel takes about 20 minutes. You can even buy a T shirt saying “I survived the tunnel.” There are other tunnels in life not designed like this one, tunnels much more difficult to recognize. Right now, you might be living in the tunnel of frustration or the tunnel of stress, the tunnel of cancer, addiction, divorce. These are tunnels that make us feel lost in darkness, like there is no way out, no chance to turn around and no place to reduce driver fatigue. You keep looking for the light at the end of the tunnel but can’t find it. Are you looking in the right places? Lights are easily disguised, they look like a smile, a phone call, coffee with a friend or a compliment, there to remind us of the sunshine, and the good things in life. These ‘lights” are usually placed at just the right intervals. Just when we need them most, they show up to make the ride shorter, give us hope and direction and a breath of fresh air. The lights are there, all we have to do is look in the right places. There is always light at the end of the tunnel and always light in the middle. Are you living in a tunnel and not recognizing it? Recognizing the tunnel helps make it disappear, opens up the view and lets the sun shine in. Call Susan to help, she can help make the tunnel disappear and you will see the light at the end of the tunnel much sooner.
