Tag, You’re It, March 2009

Tag, you’re “It”

The game of tag we played as kids had everyone running around. One person called “it” attempted to catch someone who usually ran faster than “it” could run. The object of the game was to chase until you caught or “tagged” a person thereby he would become “it.”  That person would have to chase someone else. Sometimes “it” would give up on the first person to chase someone slower because he was tired. At times the game just ended. he chase may have been too tiring, with everyone tired of running around. The kids deciding there was no point in continuing.

We think of the game of tag as a kid’s game, but it is very much an adult game. Adults chase a project, an outcome, people or a situation. We may chase a target we are not even aware of, could it be money, a habit, a need, or a feeling of _________. Words to fill in the blank include revenge, happiness, satisfaction, or accomplishment. Adults hold very tightly to what they are chasing, not wanting to let go. Just as the kids didn’t want to look like they gave up, adults don’t either. However sometimes the kids chased the wrong target and so do we? Relationships, careers and time are lost because we chase the wrong target, looking with tunnel vision and holding tightly to the wrong outcome.  We just don’t see the big picture and all the different possibilities.

Ask yourself.

Who or what are you chasing?

Are you chasing the right person, or target, or the wrong one?

How can you tell if what you’re chasing is right?

Now that is a really hard question, a question I help many people answer.  As a coach, I help people make decisions and answer the question “is what I am chasing right?” People are generally amazed at the answers. Feel free to call me before you get too tired out in the chase.
