Kite Strings, April 2009

KITE STRINGS

One sign of spring is seeing kites flying in the sky. They swoop, twirl, dive toward the

ground, and then rise again. There is something carefree and relaxing about watching a

kite, it makes us feel at peace and takes some of the stress away.

The part of the kite we don’t see is the string. The string provides safety, an attachment

to the ground. If there was no string attached, the kite would eventually disappear into the

sky or crash to the ground, making it useless. The string is the most important part.

Sometimes we want to live life as if there are “no strings attached.” Strings that tie us

down, and make us feel like our choices are limited. Without strings attached, life would

be free, without any connections or responsibility. We would be free of the connections

that improve the world we live in, connections that form relationships we value, and the

connections that keep us from disappearing. We would be free of the connections that

ground us and provide safety so we can fly.

For most of us, life would be more difficult without the strings attached. We would lose

our value. For us, our kite strings might look like the special people in our lives, the

work we do and the things that hold us up. Think about it; maybe even thank your strings.

I am always available to talk about strengthening the “strings” and the relationships in

your life. Feel free to call me and forward this to your friends.
