Cross Purposes
We celebrate the cross on Easter Sunday. The cross stands as a very important symbol in most parts of the world. When you look at the cross what do you see and what do you think about?

A cross points in four different directions, do you ever feel like your life points in four different directions? (Only four? Doesn’t life point in more directions than that? If only life was that simple.)

But when you look at the cross, there is one point where everything connects, the point that brings it all together, the point everything comes back to. Your life has one common point, one common theme also. Some of you might think the common point is your home, money, career, or a special someone. But the common point is deeper than those things. Your common theme is something you carry with you all the time. It is what you stand for in life, what you value.

Values are not something that take up space on a table, like some of your needs and wants do. Values don’t depend on other people. They are formed, grow and can change during life. Values are difficult to see except through your actions and they are hard to talk about. It is easy to tell people about some of your needs and wants, but not so easy to tell people about what you value. However, you “tell” people what you value through your actions. What are you “telling” people? Are you telling people you like to be in control, be angry or that the most important thing in life is ________ ( I will let you fill in the blank.) Instead hopefully you “tell” people you value such things as generosity, humility, kindness, trust, reliability, faith or the well being of other people. Those are some examples. They are the point where everything meets, the point we come back to.

My question to you is this. What is your point, the point where everything meets? For some of you the point where everything meets, the point everything comes back to, is the cross. Happy Easter!

There is a huge difference between needs, wants and values. I have spoken to groups about this and have had many conversations about it with clients. Once you recognize what your needs and values are, all of life changes to one with far less stress, more peace and improved relationships. Feel free to give me a call to talk about it.
