Under the Surface, May 2012
Visiting a zoo is a fascinating and fun experience. Zoos are full of exhibits and exotic animals, some from remote parts of the world and they are very interesting to watch. I had the opportunity to wander around the Milwaukee zoo watching animals and people. One thought kept occurring to me. An exhibit was missing, nowhere to be found. That exhibit would be the one that showed life underground, everything that happens beneath the surface of the earth. Did you know there is an orchid that lives its entire life underground? Bacteria can be found 4 and 5 kilometers under the surface. Thousands of animals and insects live under the surface, and they bring changes to life above.
This May we will be planting gardens, let’s not forget about all the root systems and the time it takes for plants to grow before they ever break through the surface. Did you know it takes years for some plants to develop root systems and grow before they produce their first crop. When you sit down for the beloved morning cup of coffee, know that it was years before the coffee plant produces beans. The same is true for blueberries, garlic, cranberries and grapes. We forget about this. After all, out of sight, out of mind. Things take time and we are impatient.
May marks a milestone for thousands of college and high school graduates who have spent years developing strong root systems. Now they are ready to break through the surface and make a difference in the world. It is exciting for them and exciting for us.
I extend congratulations to all the graduates this month. You made it!! I am especially proud of two of them. My daughter will receive her bachelor’s degree in social work and my son will receive his high school diploma.
Parents and families, congratulations, you made it! They couldn’t have done without you!
